Newcastle United evening headlines: Jamie Reuben talks transfer budget and Toon told to take risk

A look at the latest Newcastle United headlines on Wednesday, June 7.

Newcastle United should take Dominik Szoboszlai 'risk' as James Maddison stock decreases

Newcastle United have a decision on their hands this summer. The transfer window is around the corner and the targets are already flooding in. Two highly-rated stars continue to be linked with a move to St James' Park - in the form of James Maddison and Dominik Szoboszlai. Both attacking midfielders, both seeking pastures new and both realistic options for Newcastle in the coming months.

The pursuit of Maddison is nothing new. The Leicester City man has attracted interest for well over 12 months, from the north east and elsewhere. Brendan Rodgers managed to keep his star man at the King Power for one last dance as the former Premier League winners succumbed to relegation.

Sven Botman's international dream as Newcastle United star waits for Netherlands debut

Sven Botman has been one of Newcastle United's most consistent performers in a landmark campaign which saw the Toon Army reach the Carabao Cup final and then claim a fourth-placed finish in the Premier League to qualify for next season's Champions League.

After a stellar campaign both personally and for the club, the 23-year-old has turned his attentions to the international scene with the Netherlands.

Botman and his colleagues are currently in a training camp ahead of next Wednesday's Nations League semi-final against Croatia in Rotterdam, with the powerful defender hoping he can finally make his senior debut for his country, after a number of false starts.

The Toon ace had hoped to earn a first senior cap earlier this year in games against France and Gibraltar in the European Championships qualifying campaign, but a bout of stomach flu put paid to those hopes.

Newcastle defender who has taken 'tips' from 'top' team-mates hints at potential loan exit

Newcastle United academy defender Alex Murphy is keen to play first-team football next season. The Republic of Ireland youth international has quickly settled into life on Tyneside since making the move from Galway last summer.

Murphy has captained the under-21 side on several occasions this season, while also being one of several prospects to earn call-ups to train with Eddie Howe's senior squad. The 18-year-old joined the first team for their pre-season training camp in Portugal just weeks after his arrival, while also making his first-team debut for as a substitute Newcastle in the Diriyah Season Cup victory over Al Hilal in December.

Murphy will celebrate his 19th birthday later this month, and the centre-back has stressed his desire to build upon his first-team experience in the League of Ireland in the coming campaign. He told ChronicleLive: "The aim is to be playing first-team football every week, whether it's here or somewhere else.

"You want to be playing first-team football, the under-21s is a good standard but the real aim is first-team football every week. That's what you want to be doing, and hopefully that's where I am."

What Klopp, Ten Hag and top managers said about Newcastle United's Eddie Howe last season

There is little doubt over the job Eddie Howe has done to turn Newcastle United’s fortunes around since his appointment shortly after Newcastle United’s takeover in 2021.

Some managers have been full of praise for the job he has done so far, whilst some have been critical of the tactics employed by Howe’s side. But as Howe himself has said “We’re not here to be popular, we’re here to compete.”

So just what have Premier League managers said about Howe during this season...

Leeds United charged by FA in relation to crowd control against Newcastle United

Leeds United have been charged with misconduct in relation to crowd control during the Premier League clash with Newcastle United last season. Magpies head coach Eddie Howe was confronted by a supporter during the 2-2 draw at Elland Road last month.

The Whites issued the supporter with a lifetime ban and West Yorkshire Police charged a man with assault. A statement from the force said: "Police have charged a man with assault and entering the field of play following an incident at Elland Road football stadium during the Leeds United versus Newcastle United football match yesterday (13/5).

"The man has been bailed to appear before magistrates on July 21." The supporter was escorted away by security, but Leeds face prosecution from the Football association.

An FA statement read: "Leeds United FC has been charged with misconduct in relation to crowd control that occurred during its Premier League game against Newcastle United FC on Saturday 13 May 2023.

Newcastle United star ranked among European elite along with Messi, Mbappe and Bellingham

Europe's best XI players this season have been revealed and it includes Newcastle United's very own Kieran Trippier. The defender joins a star-studded line-up, that also includes the likes of Lionel Messi, Jude Bellingham and Kylian Mbappe.

It's been a fantastic campaign for Trippier, who has played a key part in Newcastle's success this season. He has featured in all 38 Premier League matches as Eddie Howe's side secured an excellent top four finish to book their place in the Champions League next season.

And judging by his form, Trippier will not look out of place when he comes up against the cream of Europe. The England man is rated as being Newcastle's best player last season, according to player performance website whoscored.com.

His eight man of the match awards could not be matched by anyone else in a black and white shirt and his average rating of 7.41 earned him a place among the top six in the Premier League. He was seen as the best defender in the division, with the five players in front being Gabriel Jesus, Bruno Fernandes, Harry Kane, Erling Haaland and Kevin De Bruyne.

Newcastle's 'detailed' transfer budget process and Yasir Al-Rumayyan's impact on spending strategy

Newcastle United co-owner Jamie Reuben has provided a revealing insight into how the club calculates their transfer budget based on data and character assessments. The Magpies owners have already invested in excess of £200 million into the playing squad since the takeover in October 2021, with another busy window expected this summer.

Eddie Howe's side defied pre-season predictions to secure a top-four finish as well as reach the club's first domestic final for 24 years. The Newcastle head coach has stressed the need for 'elite' recruits in the upcoming window, explaining he would like two starting elevens capable to cope with the impact of Champions League nights on the schedule.

The Magpies have already been linked with a host of exciting additions, with James Maddison and Dominik Szoboszlai among the names currently under consideration. Reuben was asked about how the board determine how much to spend in each window, and the businessman outlined the process while also hailing chairman Yasir Al-Rumayyan's impact in elevating the importance of data in the decision-making process.

He told the Business of Sport podcast: "It is quite a detailed procedure. First of all, we have amazing executives at the club that will outline weaknesses and strengths, and things we need to work on, and things we need to add."
