Newcastle United evening headlines as Eddie Howe sets Elliot Anderson first-team challenge

Here are your Newcastle United evening headlines for Friday, March 24.

Eddie Howe sets Elliot Anderson challenge to break into starting line-up with Newcastle United

Eddie Howe feels that Elliot Anderson has now reached the toughest part of his career - but insists the 20-year-old is coping well as he looks to earn more chances.

Anderson put in a superb display in the 2-1 win over Nottingham Forest and was robbed of his first senior goal by an atrocious decision from referee Paul Tierney who called offside. But Howe is delighted with the youngster's progress.

Kieran Trippier's Newcastle United traits rub off on England in famous win over Italy

Kieran Trippier punched the air in Naples as England's goals flew past the man who thwarted them in the Euro 2020 final at Wembley.

It was the intimidating 6ft 5in frame of Paris St-Germain stopper Gianluigi Donnarumma that had denied the Three Lions two summers ago with penalty saves which stopped Jadon Sancho and Bukayo Saka. Trippier did not start the Euro 2024 qualifier at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium last night.

But his celebrations from the dugout weren't his only contribution and when the muck and bullets were flying, the Newcastle United captain was summoned by Gareth Southgate from the sidelines. England had been 2-0 up and in full control of their clash against Italy thanks to Declan Rice and Harry Kane's record-breaking strike from the spot.

Eddie Howe reveals reason why he never sits down in Newcastle United's dugout

Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe has insisted he will never be the type of manager to watch a game from the stands or even sitting down in his heated seat in the dugout.

Howe has also insisted that he has no intention of ditching his tracksuit any time soon. Howe certainly has a different style to previous managerial greats at United such as Sir Bobby Robson and Rafa Benitez that usually preferred a suit and tie.

The United head coach opted against wearing a suit ahead of the Carabao Cup final and has spoken of maintaining a bond with his players - even if he can't be on the field with him. Howe's managerial style has certainly been a hit with Toon supporters with the 45-year-old seen roaring his team on from the sidelines and urging attacks at St James' Park.

Sander Berge breaks silence on January transfer window 'interest' amid Newcastle United links

Sheffield United midfielder Sander Berge has claimed that "there was interest" in his services after he was heavily linked with a move to Newcastle United in the January transfer window.

Berge looked set for a move away from Bramall Lane after he was pulled out of an FA Cup tie against Wrexham at the last minute just 48 hours before the winter window closed amid reported interest from Premier League sides Fulham, Newcastle and West Ham.

And now the Sheffield United star has spoken about the speculation linking him with a move away from the Blades while on international duty with Norway.

Alexander Isak lifts lid on Alan Shearer's 'very involved' Newcastle United backing

Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak has revealed that Alan Shearer is "very involved" with the squad as he opened up on the influence that the club legend has had on him personally.

Isak has headed into the international break in fine form as a Newcastle player having scored three goals in his last two starts for the Magpies. Nominations for both player and goal of the month awards have capped off what has been a fine month for the former Real Sociedad man.

Eddie Howe's side now sit just two points outside of the top four but know that victory against Manchester United in their first game back from the international break would see them move up into third on goal difference. A raucous St James' Park will no doubt hope Isak can find the back of the net once again against Erik ten Hag's squad.
