Eddie Howe's £200m Newcastle United answer immediately vindicated as eyes turn to January
With Newcastle United in nosebleed territory at the top end of the Premier League, critics and loyalists continue to clash over the root cause of their success so far this season.
Much has been made of United's significant spending in the last two transfer windows. A near-perfect recruitment drive and a lavish £200m squad overhaul has of course sparked a conversation, with only a handful of Premier League sides able to match that type of spending power in such a limited period.

Howe this week stressed his 'disappointment' over the debate that continues to rage over Newcastle 's recent revival. The boss wants more credit for the players he inherited and the roles they are playing in the St James' Park revolution.
"They're a contender" - Pep Guardiola's gushing praise for Newcastle United and Eddie Howe
Pep Guardiola has talked up Newcastle United's chances of getting into the Champions League next season.
The former Barcelona and Bayern Munich boss has described the Magpies as "a contender" to get into Europe's elite competition next term. Newcastle drew 3-3 with Man City at the start of the campaign and Guardiola stated he was impressed back in August.
In new praise for the Magpies, Guardiola said: "Phewww, they are a contender, a contender to be there. "The manager is Eddie Howe and you know how good he is. With the new players that come and the way they play, brave."
Newcastle United notes: Joelinton the true competitor, Aston Villa ploy backfires and Howe's message
Newcastle United rolled Aston Villa over 4-0 at St James' Park to stay in the Champions League places on a day in which it could easily have been seven or eight for the visitors.
It keeps Newcastle in contention for Europe but also leaves other teams fearing the Magpies after eight matches unbeaten in the Premier League. For Eddie Howe it is now just one defeat in 13 matches and the World Cup break probably comes at a bad time for Newcastle.
On a day of great moments, here's the latest batch of Newcastle notes.
