Newcastle United defender Dan Burn wasn't lacking in confidence when he was asked about representing England at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
Burn has suddenly entered the England World Cup conservation following the recent injury to Ben Chilwell. The Chelsea left-back is expected to miss this winter's tournament in Qatar, after he tore his hamstring in Chelsea's victory over Red Bull Salzburg in the UEFA Champions League.
There is also uncertainty surrounding the fitness of Reece James, Kyle Walker and Kyle Walker-Peters heading into the tournament, and Burn's versatility could prove a useful tool.
Burn admits that he would be 'surprised' if he was named in Gareth Southgate's squad but argues that there are few left-sided defenders in better form than him at the moment.
"I'd be surprised," Burn admitted in an interview with Sky Sports. "But I do think that there's not many left-sided defenders playing as well as I am at the moment.
"I can play two or three different positions, whether that's wing-back, full-back, centre-back, or left of the three.
"I'm disappointed for Ben [Chilwell]. I think it's a horrible way to miss a World Cup, hopefully the scan will come back not as bad as it is. I'll probably never be able to play left-back as well as him, but I do think I would bring something to the squad."
The 30-year-old has featured in every Premier League game for the Magpies this season. Newcastle have conceded just 10 goals this season and boast the best defensive record in the Premier League. Newcastle have lost just one of their first 13 league games this term and have won five of their last six matches to climb into the top four.
