Newcastle United 'could enter' race for Leicester City star Youri Tielemans

Dan Ashworth is reportedly preparing to throw the Newcastle United hat in the ring of the battle to acquire the signature of Youri Tielemans. The Leicester City midfielder has been the subject of plenty of transfer interest in recent months and could well be on his way out of the East Midlands this summer.

After missing out on European football, the Foxes were braced to lose the Belgium international but, so far, no offers have been forthcoming. Arsenal have been the side most heavily linked with his signing but they have been negotiating deals for their other transfer priorities.

Manchester United and Tottenham have also been vaguely linked but, yet again, are yet to have made any potential interest known to Leicester. According to CBS, the Magpies are weighing up the idea of entering the race to sign Tielemans as the transfer window moves into its second month.

He said, on Twitter, on Saturday afternoon: “There is a growing feeling Newcastle could enter the Tielemans race, too. Dan Ashworth has already made enquiries.

“Challenge for Newcastle would be convincing Tielemans how he fits into a midfield with Joelinton, Bruno [Guimaraes] and [Jonjo] Shelvey. One to watch...”

Without the offer of European football, it is hard to imagine Tielemans would make the move to United this summer. Although, if the Magpies are able to push up the table during the upcoming season, he might be keen to make the move next summer given his contract situation.

The 25-year-old is into the final year of his deal at King Power Stadium and, until now, there have been no rumours of him extending. Brendan Rodgers might be keen for his midfield maestro to put pen to a paper on at least a one-year extension to ensure that he is committed to the cause heading into the 2022/23 season but that seems unlikely, at the moment.

If that is the case, and Tielemans chooses against signing a new contract, Newcastle and a few of their Premier League rivals might fancy their chances of agreeing a cut-price deal.
