Newcastle United could break 14-year Mike Ashley record in one January transfer window

There are just three days to go until the current transfer window slams shut and Newcastle United are still expected to be busy between now and the end of the month.

Kieran Trippier became the Magpies' first January signing after making the £12m move from Atletico Madrid, before Burnley forward Chris Wood joined in a £25m deal ahead of the home game against Watford.

However, Newcastle are keen to add more quality to their squad in a bid to stay in the Premier League.

Eddie Howe's side currently sit inside the relegation zone, just a point behind 17th-place Norwich City but have won just twice in all competitions all season, including last weekend's 1-0 success at Leeds United.

It's a record that the Magpies must improve and they are hoping that another couple of additions will give them the boost they need to pick up enough points to survive.

Diego Carlos and Sven Botman have been linked with a move to Newcastle all month, but it seems as though the Magpies might struggle to get those two over the line.

The Magpies have also expressed an interest in Brighton & Hove Albion centre-back Dan Burn but it could take a bid of around £15m to prize him away from the AMEX Stadium.

Although Newcastle's search for a new defender is becoming increasingly challenging, they are set to complete a move to sign midfielder Bruno Guimaraes from Lyon.

A medical has been arranged in Brazil for Friday as the Magpies look to finalise a £33m deal which would make the 24-year-old Newcastle's second-most expensive transfer in their history.

This is after Joelinton's big-money switch from Hoffenheim in 2019 but the Toon's Saudi-led ownership are showing a greater level of ambition compared to what supporters have witnessed in recent years.

The deal to bring Guimaraes to Tyneside will take Newcastle's spending this month to around £70m, which is roughly just £20m shy of what the club spent over 14 January windows combined under Mike Ashley.

There is still time for Newcastle to surpass the figure Ashley spent in January and it would be some statement from the new owners ahead of the remainder of the campaign.

Miguel Almiron is the Magpies' most expensive ever January recruit after he made the £21.6m swoop from MLS side Atlanta in 2019, while Jonjo Shelvey and Andros Townsend were both brought in for around £14m each in 2016.

Nevertheless, Newcastle are currently the biggest spenders in the Premier League this month, with Aston Villa a close second after completing the signings of Lucas Digne, Phillipe Coutinho, Robin Olsen and Calum Chambers.

Everton have also been busy in the transfer window after Nathan Patterson, Vitaly Mykolenko and Anwar El Ghazi all made the moves to Goodison Park.

Meanwhile, none of the current top-six have made a senior addition their squad but that could all change by 11pm on Monday, January 31 when the window closes.

Howe will be hoping to have another couple of faces through the door as he tries to keep the club in the Premier League and avoid a third relegation to the Championship in 13 years.
