Newcastle United chairman sends Premier League warning after beating Liverpool to Champions League place

Newcastle United chairman Yasir Al-Rumayyan has explained his vision for the Magpies to be the "number one" club in the world.

The Magpies underwent an incredible transformation in the 2022/23 season, qualifying for the Champions League and reaching the Carabao Cup Final after staving off relegation only one year before. Boss Eddie Howe received plaudits for leading to his side to the top four with the financial backing of the Saudi-led consortium.

This, of course, was to the detriment of Liverpool, who finished four points behind their rivals in fifth, bringing a six-year stay in Europe's top competition and all the benefits that come with it to a disappointing end.

Now, having already upset the Premier League apple cart, the North East club have made their ambitions clear. They intend to build on their new foundations and truly oust the Reds and other rivals from the conversation at the top of the Premier League.

In an interview club's media channel, NUFCTV, about his first full season on Tyneside, Al-Rumayyan said: "It is a great achievement to start with. Did we expect to do that? Yes. We have the ingredients for success. We have the will. We want to achieve the best positions we can.

"(We) have the right people in management - the technical director [Dan Ashworth], the manager [Eddie Howe] - and we have the right players. To top it all, we have a great fanbase.

"If you have the right people and the will, and the right processes and funds, if you put all these together I think it is a great recipe for success and that is what we are achieving right now.

"Finishing in the top four, our revenue is increasing. Remember, you have to work within the financial fair play framework, so the more revenue we will have, the more players we will have ready.

"Then the Champions League will add more revenue for us. The sponsorship is improving and that's more funds and more revenue.

"If you put all these things together, I think we should have an ambition and aspiration to be number one."

He added: "We have one of the best fanbases in the EPL and potentially the world."

And Newcastle's success could hit the Reds hard. Indeed, Liverpool could lose as much as £50m in prize money as a result of tumbling into the Europa League.

Additionally, Newcastle have begun to make steps into the sponsorship market ahead of their first Champions League campaign since 2003. Earlier this month it was announced that events company Sela would become the primary shirt sponsor of Magpies in a deal worth £25m-per-year - a sharp increase on the £6.5m-per-year previously paid by Chinese gambling company Fun88.

Where the deal came under scrutiny, however, was the fact that Newcastle's majority shareholder - the Saudi Public Investment Fund - is also a majority shareholder in Sela.
