Newcastle United back Sam Fender for Brit Awards glory with post in his honour

Newcastle United are right behind local lad Sam Fender as he aims to take the Brit Awards by storm on Tuesday night.

The North Shields singer is up for three awards at this year's event, hosted by Mo Gilligan, with him and his band joining the likes of Liam Gallagher and Ed Sheeran on the Brits performers list for this year as well.

Sam is up for three accolades at the event - Best Rock/Alternative Act, Artist of the Year and Album of the Year, facing competition from the likes of Coldplay, Adele and Dave in the respective categories.

As well as being the hottest name in UK music at the minute, with second album Seventeen Going Under outselling the rest of the top 10 combined as it shot to number 1 in the autumn, Sam is also a huge Newcastle fan.

He and saxophone player Johnny Blue Hat joined throngs of NUFC supporters outside St James' Park on the night the club's takeover was announced, leading to a now famous hungover appearance on BBC Breakfas t the following morning.

Whenever he plays in Newcastle he makes his arrival on stage to Geordie anthem Local Hero and, at his packed out show at the Utilita Arena, St James' Park icons, Wor Flags, held flags aloft in his honour as he made his entrance.

Repaying Sam's support of them, United spoke out in support of him on Tuesday afternoon, taking to the club's official Twitter account to wish him well on his big night.

They wrote: "Artist of the Year, Album of the Year, Best Rock/Alternative Artist. Sam Fender is nominated for three awards at the #BRITs this evening!

"Best of luck, @samfendermusic. We're all right behind you!"

At the time of writing, the post had been retweeted hundreds of times and gained plenty of comments.

One fan replied: "The Geordie hometown hero!" with another commenting: "I’d love to see him play local hero live before a game."
