Newcastle transfer news: Hugo Ekitike "contact", Sven Botman and William Saliba latest

Newcastle splashed out £94million in January to begin their Toon revolution, and the Magpies will get the chequebook out again this summer.

Boss Eddie Howe has tried to manage expectations by saying they need to be "smart" in the transfer market, perhaps in a message to selling clubs that they will not let themselves be taken advantage of because of their new vast wealth. But Newcastle still plan to be busy this summer as they build on January signings to continue the club's progress.

Howe may plead for patience, but he will be expected to build a squad capable of challenging for Europe next season as Newcastle and their Saudi owners take the second step in their development. Mirror Sport has the round-up of the latest Newcastle transfer news and rumours.

Magpies hope to beat Milan to Botman

Newcastle are battling with AC Milan to land Dutch Under-21 defender Sven Botman from Lille and hope incoming sporting director Dan Ashworth will be able to close the deal, according to the Newcastle Chronicle. Newcastle have agreed compensation with Brighton for Ashworth and are waiting for permission for him officially to begin working.

They are vying with Milan for Botman and while they are waiting for Ashworth to start work, the Serie A side are in the middle of a takeover. This could leave the door open for Newcastle to land Botman and Lille want just over £25m.

Newcastle still in contact over Ekitike

Newcastle failed with a £33m bid for Stade Reims' Hugo Ekitike in January, but their president claims the Premier League club are still on contact over his possible transfer. Newcastle agreed a fee with Reims in the winter, only for Ekitike to turn down the move.

The Toon remain keen on the striker and Reims president Jean-Pierre Caillot says they are open to selling Ekitike. Caillot told L'Union Ardennes: “They’re an ambitious club, who want to build on the long-term and who manifested their interest this winter.

“Since then, contacts never stopped. It’s typically the type of environment where he could continue to grow and go to the next level.”

Newcastle vying with Leicester for Arsenal defender

Finally, L'Equipe claims Newcastle are among a host of clubs keen on Arsenal's young French defender William Saliba. The 21-year-old spent last season on loan at Marseille where he won Ligue 1 Young Player of the Year.

Marseille want to re-sign him for next season and Newcastle and Leicester are also interested. Saliba wants to play regular first-team football next season and is also being tracked by Napoli and Atletico Madrid.
