Southampton boss Nathan Jones hopes Jacob Murphy's wave and Newcastle United's touchline antics could 'come back to bite' in their decisive Carabao Cup clash. The Magpies take a one-goal lead into the second leg at St James' Park on Tuesday night, with Joelinton scoring the only goal of the game in an eventful encounter on the south coast.
Saints centre-back Duje Caleta-Car was shown a second yellow card for a late foul on Allan Saint-Maximin, and the Croatian international was waved off the pitch by Jacob Murphy and Bruno Guimaraes. Jones and Newcastle assistant Jason Tindall had to be separated following the full-time whistle, with referee Stuart Attwell among those trying to break the pair apart.
Southampton legend Francis Benali singled out Murphy for his sarcastic wave during Sky Sports coverage of the first leg, insisting 'we don't like to see that'. Jones will not be using the incidents for added 'motivation', but admits he hopes they do come back to haunt the Magpies following the full-time whistle on Tyneside.

Asked if the incidents add more bite to the tie, Jones told HampshireLive: "I think it does. I think it might. I've been in games where there's been a bit of a niggle here or there and some leftovers that sometimes come back to bite you. Let’s hope that does.
"It doesn’t give me any more motivation on the side of the pitch and I had some words with a member of their staff, but it’s all part and parcel of the game. My motivation is to win a game and try and get Southampton to Wembley.
"I'll do anything it takes to do that, within reason. But yeah, if it does, it does. If it doesn't, then I don't know, but you'll have to ask one or two of the others."
