Newcastle United are in such an 'unbelievable position' that it would make 'no difference' if Allan Saint-Maximin decides to leave this summer. That is the view of former number nine Andy Cole, who reckons the high-flying Magpies would be unaffected if their talismanic forward chooses to push for a transfer.
Saint-Maximin endured a frustrating season at St James' Park, with successive injuries hampering his efforts to regain his starting spot. The number 10 began the campaign in fine form, impressing in the thrilling home draw with Manchester City in August before scoring a sensational volley to salvage a point at Wolves days later.
However, that proved to be Saint-Maximin's only goal of the season, with the 26-year-old spending most of the final months of the season as an impact substitute. Eddie Howe was spoilt for choice on the left flank with Anthony Gordon, Alexander Isak, Joelinton and Joe Willock all capable of deputising in the position.

Saint-Maximin was arguably Newcastle's biggest asset in his first two seasons on Tyneside, helping Steve Bruce's side secure survival on both occasions. However, the former Nice star's influence has waned in recent months and Cole believes the Magpies have proven they could now cope with his departure.
He told BoyleSports: "It's down to Eddie Howe why Allan Saint-Maximin is not playing. I think there is no doubt that they'll come to an agreement in the summer. If a player moves on, it's because the manager does not want him anymore or the player wants more game time elsewhere. It makes no difference to me if Saint-Maximin decided to leave Newcastle United or not because they're in an unbelievable position."
It is expected to be another busy transfer window for Newcastle, as Eddie Howe looks to prepare his squad to compete on four fronts after booking their place in the Champions League. Kieran Trippier was the first signing of the new era, and Cole has hailed the impact of the England international as a 'statement signing'.
The ex-Newcastle star added: "Kieran Trippier has been massive for Newcastle United, defensively and offensively. I think Trippier was the key to allowing Newcastle United to attract more players to the club because Trippier was a statement signing. Anytime he plays for England, he never lets us down."
