Newcastle to host Vic Reeves exhibition as talented comedian returns with latest artwork

Vibrant artworks featuring birds and landscapes by Jim Moir will go on show in Newcastle this spring, offering fans and collectors a chance to snap up a unique selection of work.

The artist, comedian and actor - best known as Vic Reeves - is set to host his third exhibition at The Biscuit Factory in the city and the latest display, Hot Buttered Mattress, will feature a collection of ornithological paintings and drawings including his famous Bird Colour Wheel.

Among them will be a colourful scene titled Curlews Over Lindisfarne. The display will run in the city from March 4 until April 2, ahead of new Sky Arts show Painting Birds with Jim and Nancy Moir - made with his wife - which is due to air later this year.

Moir, former star of locally-made sitcom Hebburn, has announced he will be retiring his Vic Reeves alter-ego this year following the making of new film The Glove with regular TV partner Bob Mortimer. Fans who do not know his work as an artist will have a chance to explore his wide range and breadth in the new exhibition.

But he has always had a love of painting and has been produced art since the 1980s. His parents were artists who encouraged his talent and, besides painting, his work over the years that has included drawing, photography and sculpture.

The star, who in 2021 revealed he has an inoperable but benign brain tumour which has left him deaf in one ear, said in a recent interview: “Painting is what I always wanted to do. Even while doing Vic and Bob shows, the art was always there, even when it might have looked like it was in the background."

He added: "Now, though, I can sit in my studio all day, with my own schedule.” His new art show at The Biscuit Factory will also include selected pieces from his recent catalogue and all work on show will be available to buy.

A previous exhibition at the Ouseburn gallery, called A Mountain of Turkish Delight, proved a sell-out success and its general manager Rachel Brown said: “We’re delighted to welcome Jim back to the gallery for the third time this March.

"It’s a privilege to be the only space in the North East that exhibits Jim’s work, and to see different elements of his practice unfold over the years we’ve worked with him is a joy.” For more information about what's on offer at the gallery see here.
