Newcastle star Fabian Schar refuses to laud it up and won't look at the Premier League table yet

Fabian Schar says that some Newcastle United players are refusing to even look at the Premier League table - and the Switzerland star feels that the Magpies still have room for improvement.

Schar is delighted with Newcastle's last two matches but feels that it would be wrong to get carried away with what has been a more than respectable start. United head into the next round of fixtures sitting in the top six of the top flight.

Yet the centre-back, who has been a permanent fixture in Eddie Howe's side, wants to stay hungry and humble ahead of the clash at Man United.

Schar, never one to mince his words when things weren't up to standard at the club, told Chronicle Live: "I don't look too much at the table to be fair. It's still early in the season.

"Not all the teams are on the same games. Yes, we can be satisfied with recent games and where we are but it's focusing game by game."

Schar feels that Howe has changed the way Newcastle play but also the way they think on the pitch. Where once Toon players were told to execute a defensive game plan and asked to park the bus, training and attitude is all about pressing high up the park.

The 31-year-old Switzerland international said: "When you look at how the goals are being scored they are coming from us pressing and that's what we do in training. We are just very pleased with it all and looking forward to the next game."

Newcastle rolled over Brentford in some style but Schar said the performance may have been trickier than it looked from the stands.

The Toon star said: "Back to back wins now, and another great result. To score five goals this week and four the weekend before leaves us really pleased.

"We know they are behind us and when we play the way we play now it means they are there with us from the first minute. Obviously, even in victory, the first 10 minutes against Brentford were not easy. I thought they made it difficult. But obviously we scored two quick goals which helped us."

Schar resisted the opportunity to laud it up after the thrashing of Brentford and instead demanded more. He felt there is more to come from each player.

Schar added: "We know the quality we have in the team and we know what we can achieve if we are all at it. Even when things could be difficult in games, Brentford got back in it at 2-1, momentum could have changed.

"But it took us five minutes to score another goal which was really important. The game was done after that."
