Newcastle's Tyneside Cinema cancels Russian ballet screenings as it takes a stand against war on Ukraine

A Newcastle cinema has taken a stand against Russia's invasion of Ukraine by cancelling two upcoming screenings.

Tyneside Cinema was due to show Bolshoi Ballet’s Swan Lake and Pharaoh’s Daughter at Tyneside Cinema in March but decided to cancel both performances from the Russian ballet company following the outbreak of war.

It comes after some audience members had raised concerns over whether it was appropriate the screenings would go ahead as planned under the current circumstances.

Tyneside Cinema has confirmed that it will give a full refund to anyone who had booked tickets.

A Tyneside Cinema spokeswoman said: "Given the situation in Ukraine we have cancelled our upcoming screenings of the Bolshoi Ballet’s Swan Lake and Pharaoh’s Daughter at Tyneside Cinema.

"We will of course make a full refund for all tickets."

Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered a full-scale invasion of Ukraine on Thursday, February 24 declaring that Russia could not feel "safe, develop and exist" because of what he claimed was a constant threat from modern Ukraine.

Over the last five days, Russia has unleashed a wave of attacks targeting Ukrainian airfields and fuel facilities.

More than 500,000 people have fled Ukraine since Russia invaded the country last week, according to the UN refugee agency.
