Newcastle's 'open dialogue' with Bruno Guimaraes as Magpies plan for phase two of exciting project

Bruno Guimaraes' representatives are in open dialogue on extending the Brazil star's contract at St James' Park.

The midfielder has been heavily linked with Real Madrid in the past week or so but insists he is happy on Tyneside with his family settled in the area. However, Bruno still has three years left on the £120,000 per week deal he signed last January.

Any improved extension would make Bruno Newcastle's top earner at Benton but the Magpies will need to build a team around the midfielder if they are to challenge for Europe again next season. The Magpies have recently handed Miguel Almiron and Kieran Trippier new deals as they look to start preparations for the next phase of the club's exciting project.

It is believed that goalkeeper Nick Pope could also be rewarded for his excellent debut campaign on Tyneside while there is talk of an extension for Dan Burn. Eddie Howe stated that nothing was imminent at his last press conference at the training ground but contracts are a work in progress these days with sporting director Dan Ashworth at the wheel.

After picking up the North East Football Writers' Association Player of the Year, Bruno said this week: "When I said yes to Newcastle, I was sure I was choosing a big project. From the bottom of my heart, I didn't expect to live the wonderful things I'm living here."

Meanwhile, Newcastle are also assessing the next step for a clutch of players who will see their current deals end in June. Matt Ritchie, Paul Dummett, Mark Gillespie and Loris Karius will all see their contracts expire soon but no major decisions have been announced yet. Ciaran Clark is another on that list but is expecting to leave the club on a free transfer.

Clark has been on loan at Sheffield United and while the Blades look likely to return to the Premier League no firm decisions have been made.
