Newcastle's Amazon documentary to ask 'challenging questions' on Saudi owners

Newcastle United fans should not expect an All or Nothing-style series when the club's four-part Amazon Prime series airs this summer. That is according to the Athletic, who claim the series will focus on the Magpies' commercial department and pose 'challenging questions' about the club's relationship with Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund.

Rumours of a behind-the-scenes documentary charting the rebuild on Tyneside following the Mike Ashley era first emerged last summer. Newcastle co-owner Amanda Staveley confirmed earlier this month that production was under way, stressing it was a move the club made in order to 'grow our finances' in light of Financial Fair Play restrictions.

It means the Magpies will become the fourth Premier League side to grant behind-the-scenes access to the streaming service, following in the footsteps of Arsenal, Manchester City and Tottenham. However, the Toon Army have been warned not to expect a similar All or Nothing-style offering.

The report outlines the documentary is a joint production between 72 Films and London Entertainment. The former produced Netflix show 'Jimmy Savile: A British Horror Story', while the latter is responsible for an upcoming documentary on Boris Becker and 'Wagatha Christie' film.

As such, the United documentary is expected to be 'punchier' than the recent All Or Nothing productions from their top-flight rivals. The role of PIF, Newcastle's majority owners, has been the subject of regular scrutiny since the takeover was approved in October 2021, with Amnesty International recently calling for the Premier League to 're-examine' the buyout.
