Newcastle Quayside fire: Everything we know so far following blaze at the Quilted Camel

A major area of Newcastle's Quayside was cordoned off after a fire broke out in a listed building.

Shortly after 5pm on Wednesday, firefighters were called to tackle a fire at the Quilted Camel on Sandhill.

The Quilted Camel is described on its website as a "retro chic 70s style bar with a quayside party atmosphere...set in a grade 2 listed building."

What happened on Wednesday evening?

At around 4.42pm on Wednesday March 2, a fire was reported to have broken out at the Quilted Camel on Sandhill.

The fire was eventually stood down at 9.50pm.

What have the Fire Service said?

The Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service confirmed that six appliances, a command unit, duty officers and an aerial ladder were deployed to the area. They received the call at 4.42pm.

A spokesperson said this morning: “We can confirm that our crews left the scene after extinguishing a fire at a commercial property on the Quayside last night at 9:20pm.

"Our investigation into the fire will begin today.”

What have the police said?

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: "Officers are carrying out enquiries to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.

"Anyone with information about the fire is asked to contact police via the ‘Tell Us Something’ page of our website or by calling 101 quoting reference number NP-20220302-0695.

"Alternatively you can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111."

What was the cause of the fire?

Specialist fire investigators were present at the scene and officers are now carrying out enquiries to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and determine the cause.

Our reporter James Robinson spoke to incident manager Andy Willford at the scene who told him the blaze is being treated as accidental.

Police confirmed on Thursday morning that enquiries have shown the fire was not started deliberately.

Was anybody injured?

Thankfully, there are no reports of any injuries.

What impact did the fire have on the local area?

The surrounding buildings have been evacuated as a safety precaution and a number of roads were closed leading to the scene, police have said.

Businesses in the area hope to be able to reopen on Thursday.

The Quilted Camel only opens Friday and Saturdays and it will open tomorrow.

Was there disruption on the roads?

The Newcastle Quayside road was closed along with the adjacent Swing Bridge.

The Close from Skinnerburn Road was also shut to cars, as well as the pedestrian street from Dean Street down to the Quayside.

Is the road still closed?

The Quayside has since reopened in both directions from Bridge Street to Lombard Street.

What is the historic significance of the building?

Parts of the building date back to the 17th century and the venue is Grade II-listed.
