Newcastle Quayside bar Charts closes to drinkers but 'exciting' new venue in the pipeline

A popular bar on Newcastle's Quayside has served drinkers for the last time this summer as it gets set to undergo a major refurbishment.

Charts, which opened in the city five years ago, has confirmed that it will be closing its doors temporarily before reopening as a "brand new bar and restaurant."

The new venue will be called 'Charts House' and will open in September after refurbishment work is carried out to transform the space.

Announcing the news to customers on social media at the weekend, Charts said it was a "bittersweet moment for the team".

"Bittersweet moment for the team locking the door to Charts for the very last time," a venue spokesman said.

"We can't thank everyone enough for all the support over the last five years and we're looking forward to the future and bringing a new and exciting concept to the Quayside. We'll see you again in September."

Pub Culture opened Charts in 2018, breathing new life into the historic building that had lain lay empty for seven years following the closure of Flynn's. The company, which also opened the Engine Room in the former Sunderland fire station, chose the Charts name as the building used to be a map house for sailors setting off from the Tyne.

Charts retained the map house's exposed brick walls, while huge windows offer guests stunning views of the river.

Another post by the venue that announced the news said: "After five happy years at Charts the time has come for us to temporarily close our doors as we get ready to bring a new and exciting venture to the Quayside. We will be back in September 2022 as Chart House a brand-new bar and restaurant – watch this space!"
