Newcastle open to apply for safe standing at St James' Park after Government announcement

Newcastle United will be able to open a safe standing area at St James' Park from next season, following a Government announcement. All clubs in the top two tiers of English football can apply to operate licensed safe standing next season following successful trials at Cardiff City, Chelsea, Manchester City, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur in the second half of last season.

Brentford, Queens Park Rangers and Wolverhampton Wanderers have also joined those clubs in offering designated areas for home and away fans from the start of the 2022-23 season. Newcastle are yet to apply for safe standing, although other clubs are expected to apply as the season progresses.

The Government also confirmed that Wembley would offer limited safe standing for fans from both sets of clubs at domestic matches later in the season. The Football Association will trial safety rails at England's Nations League match against Germany in September, but at that stage spectators must remain seated.'
