Newcastle notes: Miguel Almiron shuts up Jack Grealish, crazy points tally and Brentford 'fuming'

Newcastle United impressed in both halves against Brentford to record their biggest win of the season at St James' Park and keep up their fantastic run.

Eddie Howe's Magpies now sit in fifth spot in the Premier League and after losing just one game - narrowly at Liverpool - they are full value for their position. It's still early days in the season of course but they have laid foundations and given themselves a chance of keeping pace with some of the big boys.

Things don't get easier with a tough clash at Manchester United next Sunday but Howe will take his team to Old Trafford on a high. And one thing is for sure, Geordie fans will be counting the days down until match day next weekend.

Miguel Almiron upstaging the man who mocked him

The Paraguay captain was targeted by Jack Grealish at the end of last season but is outclassing the Man City player when it comes to statistics this season. Grealish said at the end of last season, when City won the league against Villa: "He (Riyad Mahrez) played like Almiron yesterday".

But Grealish can't get anywhere near Almiron's tally of goals so far. The £21million man is actually Newcastle's top goalscorer and has four strikes compared to the Man City midfielder's solitary one goal.

The astonishing points tally Newcastle have chalked up

Don't take it for granted, United's 14 point tally is not only hard earned but extremely impressive compared to this time last year. In fact, it took the Magpies until late January to nudge past 14 points when they won at Leeds 1-0 to get to such a tally.

The fact that Howe has led United to the same amount of points in only the second week in October shows how much progress has been made. Reaching 14 points after nine games was last achieved in 2017/18 under Rafa Benitez.

But it has only been bettered twice in the last 20 years, once by Alan Pardew in 2011/12 (19) and surprisingly by Sam Allardyce in 2007/08 (17).

Brentford boss left fuming despite United's quality

The anger levels in the Brentford dressing room after the game were so loud they could be heard down the corridor at St James' Park directly after the final whistle. Thomas Frank admitted as much afterwards with his side soundly beaten and mainly by defensive errors.

Two clangers by goalie David Raya helped hand Newcastle a resounding win. But overall Brentford - who had beaten Man United to start their season - were poor.

Frank vented his anger afterwards and said: "We are of course fuming. "I can feel my anger bursting around inside me. It is the same as the players and we will bounce back."
