Newcastle NHS scientist who had life-changing operation when sister donated kidney heading to World Transplant Games in Australia

A Newcastle hospital scientist who received a kidney transplant from his sister in 2006 took on a mammoth four-hour run to mark World Kidney Day last week and fundraise so he can take part in the World Transplant Games in Australia this spring.

Wayne Hartley was just 20 in 2006 when he had his transplant. This came after a year spent receiving dialysis treatment for chronic kidney disease (CKD) three days a week for four hours a day.

That four hours inspired his run on March 9, World Kidney Day. He started and finished a four-hour run from Seaton Sluice, Northumberland. "CKD can have a massive impact on patients' lives which is why I wanted to do something to raise awareness to highlight the impact that being on haemodialysis for four hours a day, three days a week has on people," Wayne said.
