Newcastle man carries Queen’s Baton after eight-year paralysis recovery journey

A North East man, who was left with partial paralysis after being hit by a car, has run with the Queen’s Baton in the Birmingham 2022 Queen’s Baton Relay.

After he was hit by a car eight years ago, Lee Best, from Newcastle, was told by doctors that being able to walk again would be the best he could hope for, let alone run, after two lower discs in his spine had prolapsed causing paralysis below his waist. However, last week he exceeded their expectations as Lee carried the Baton through Durham during the Queen's Baton Relay.

Crowds gathered at Saltburn on the morning of Thursday, July 14 morning before the baton made its way through Redcar, Middlesbrough, Stockton-on-Tees, Darlington, Durham, Seaham, and then Sunderland before the relay continued throughout the rest of the region during the following days.
