Newcastle fans pile in after Alan Shearer delivers Brennan Johnson verdict

Newcastle United have been urged to make a move for Nottingham Forest star Brennan Johnson after Toon legend Alan Shearer gave the youngster his personal seal of approval.

Johnson has enjoyed a stellar campaign with Forest, playing a key role in the team's promotion push in the Championship this term. The 20-year-old's form has inevitably attracted the attention of other clubs.

Newcastle are reported to be among a host of interested parties, along with the likes of Brentford, Everton, Leicester City, Tottenham Hotspur, West Ham United, Burnley, Leeds United, Barnsley, Crystal Palace, Southampton, Brighton and Spanish outfit Villarreal. The Wales international is said to be valued at between £20-25million.

Johnson, whose current contract at the City Ground expires in 2023, was named the Championship young player of the season at the EFL awards on Sunday. Responding to a post about the news from the official Sky Bet Championship Twitter account, former Newcastle and Blackburn Rovers striker Shearer tweeted three clapping hands emojis.

This prompted a number of replies from Magpies fans. Here's what some of them had to say...

@Mikeale89924753: I’d be buzzing if #nufc signed him up. Get it done Eddie!

@wilsoa10: Looks a quality player him like.

@mjsquires: Would be a great signing for @NUFC this summer.

@HD_07: Hint?

@jeff00uk: Would you take him at Newcastle Al if the opportunity was there?

@carlinbiffa: £10 million plus Murphy & Darlow.

@ne14anepc: One young kid I hope the Toon look at this coming transfer window. Watched him a lot this season and he is ready for the step up.
