Newcastle fans await Chris Wood update after New Zealand camp confirm Covid-19 outbreak

Newcastle United fans are awaiting an update on Chris Wood after New Zealand confirmed a Covid-19 outbreak within their camp.

The January signing was called up to the Kiwis' squad for two international friendlies, and scored from the spot in their 3-1 defeat to Jordan on Friday.

New Zealand had been due to face Uzbekistan at The Sevens Stadium in Dubai, UAE, on Tuesday (3pm GMT), but the match has been postponed due to a 'number' of positive Covid-19 test results.

The identities of those to record a positive Covid-19 test has not been released, although New Zealand Football has confirmed all players and staff have been fully vaccinated.

New Zealand Football CEO Andrew Pagnell said: “It is fair to say the team and staff are gutted to have to cancel the game but in a situation like this player and staff welfare is the absolute priority.

"We cannot create further exposure events for the team and staff and be responsible for a possible outbreak in the Uzbekistan team as well.

“We will now be working with the team in Dubai to undertake further testing of the squad before they depart as well as supporting the players who have tested positive while they recover.

“Unfortunately, this is a risk international sport is currently faced with and hugely disappointing for all involved.”
