Batty's penalty miss
"Quickly, yes or no?" Those four words from Brian Moore still send shivers down the backs of England fans of a certain generation.
It's June 30, 1998 and sudden death in the penalty shootout between the Three Lions and Argentina in the last 16 of the World Cup. The legendary broadcaster has just asked ITV co-commentator Kevin Keegan if David Batty can keep England in the tournament as the Newcastle United midfielder steps up to take a spot-kick for his country. We all know what happened next.
However, rather than collapsing to the turf or pulling his shirt over his face after his miss, Batty simply walked back to the centre circle with his head held high after having the balls to take the penalty in the first place. Yes, Batty would have loved to have helped keep his side in the tournament, but the experienced international quickly saw the bigger picture as team-mates Tim Flowers and Gareth Southgate rushed over to console him.
There were no tears in Saint-Etienne. Batty got showered; phoned his wife, Mandy; and fronted up to the media before making his way out to the team bus where he immediately clocked bare-chested Argentina players singing at the top of their voices at the back of their coach nearby. It was probably just as well that the FA had asked Hayden Evans, Batty's agent, to come down from the stands - even if the Yorkshireman knew his friend would not need comforting.

Owners 'strive for the best'
Newcastle United are set for a 'bright future' because the club's owners 'strive for the best and always want to bring the best on board'.
That is the view of Saudi Arabia's sports minister, Prince Abdulaziz bin Turki Al Faisal, more than a year on from the Public Investment Fund (PIF) buying an 80% stake in the club after the Premier League confirmed they had received 'legally binding assurances' that the Kingdom would not control the club. This breakthrough came just days after Saudi Arabia lifted a longstanding ban on beIN Sports, the Premier League's official Middle East broadcaster.

Dickman's fury
Elliott Dickman could not hide his fury after Newcastle United U21s poor form continued with a shock cup defeat to Whitley Bay. The young Magpies fell to a 3-1 defeat at the hands of their non-league opponents in the Northumberland Senior Cup on Wednesday night.
Whitley Bay ply their trade in the ninth-tier of English football, but raced into an early two-goal lead as the visitors were unable to handle their pace and power. Michael Ndiweni pulled one back after the break, only for a stunning late strike from Malcolm Morien to condemn the Magpies to defeat.
It is a fourth straight loss for the young Magpies, and comes hot on the heels of a four-goal thrashing at Bristol City in the Premier League Cup. Dickman could not hide his frustration with his side's performance following the full-time whistle.
