Newcastle evening headlines with Anderson exclusive, Neville's verdict and Howe's trophy vision

Here are your Newcastle United headlines for November 8.

Anderson interview

Elliot Anderson knows he could have 20 career matches in the Championship bolted on his CV already this season - but after a summer chat with Eddie Howe he probably wouldn't trade those games for a crack at Crystal Palace in the League Cup in front of sell out crowd.

The Whitley Bay lad celebrated his 20th birthday by coming on as sub in the magnificent 4-1 away win at Southampton. For a boyhood Newcastle fan suggesting he is living the dream borders on an understatement.

Only last month he penned a new contract tying him down to United until 2026 and he has been snapped up by the same agency as Gareth Bale no less. He is on a roller-coaster ride but looks like he has been a Premier League player for years as he calmly walks through interview zones after matches.

Anderson was pulled back from a summer loan move to either West Brom or Luton and assured by Howe that he would be part of things with the first-team. Even on the club's tour of Austria, the Academy product did not try to keep a lid on his ambition to challenge for a place on Howe's team sheet.

The playmaker, who can also put in a tackle or two, starred away to Tranmere Rovers in the last round. And now he is hungry for more.

Howe's trophy dream

Eddie Howe has admitted that ending Newcastle United's trophy drought is a 'huge driver' for him as the Magpies boss looks to one day make history.

Supporters do not need to be reminded that it has been 53 years since Newcastle won the Fairs Cup. You have to go back even further, to 1955, for the last time the club lifted a domestic cup.

However, ahead of Wednesday night's Carabao Cup third-round tie against Crystal Palace, Howe has again made it clear that it is his 'dream' to one day bring silverware back to St James' Park. Newcastle still have a lot of work to do, of course, to realise that ambition but rather than viewing the club's long wait for success as a 'burden', Howe feels it has given his side the chance to 'create some of our own history'.

Joelinton message

Bruno Guimaraes received his call-up to the Brazil squad for this month's competition, celebrating at home with his friends, family and newborn son Matteo. Newcastle co-star Joelinton missed out on a place, despite scoring in front of national team coach Tite at St James' Park in recent weeks.

Howe has been full of praise for the reformed midfielder and admitted his disappointment for the player on Tuesday. “I think there's always disappointment for anyone who misses out,” he added.

“Joe has been incredible for me since I joined the football club, every single day he's very consistent in his work and he's producing brilliant performances but it wasn't to be for him."

Neville's verdict

Gary Neville believes the Saudi-led takeover of Newcastle United mean's the club's drastic improvement is 'not incredible' but has praised the Magpies for their 'measured' approach to recruitment. The emphatic away victory at Southampton on Sunday has guaranteed Eddie Howe's side will be in the top four at Christmas.

It is a drastic transformation in the space of a single year, with Newcastle winless and relegation favourites when the former Bournemouth boss was appointed. The new owners have spent in excess of £200 million in the transfer market, and a remarkable finish to last season saw the Magpies pull comfortably clear of danger.

This momentum has carried over to the new campaign, with Howe's side only tasting defeat once so far and winning six of their last seven Premier League fixtures. Victory at St Mary's was the perfect start to the final week before the World Cup break, with a Carabao Cup tie against Crystal Palace and a home clash with Chelsea to come.

Neville has praised Newcastle's approach with their newfound wealth, avoiding the status signings that have typically accompanied previous takeovers. The Sky Sports pundit has also singled out Miguel Almiron's development, with the Paraguay international one of several players to improve significantly during Howe's tenure.

Targett's status

Eddie Howe has made it clear that Matt Targett's time will come again in Newcastle United's starting XI.

The £15million man has started just four games this season after picking up a leg injury early in the campaign then seeing Dan Burn leapfrong him into the left-back slot he made his own last term. Targett has been an unused sub in three of the last four matches but is back in contention for the League Cup clash against Crystal Palace.

Carragher praise

Jamie Carragher has dismissed the focus on Newcastle United's transfer spending and believes the club's resurgence is down to the 'outstanding work' led by Eddie Howe. The Magpies guaranteed they will occupy a top-four spot at Christmas with a comfortable victory at Southampton in their last outing.

It means Howe's side have now won six of their last seven matches, and this form has led to talk of whether they can qualify for next season's Champions League. Carragher feels a top-four finish is a step too far for Newcastle this term, but accepts their start to the campaign means they have to be included in the 'conversation'.

Miguel Almiron is the latest first-team star to show drastic improvements under Howe, and the Sky Sports pundit believes the whole squad now look 'good' top-flight players. Carragher also feels the former Bournemouth boss has delivered an emphatic response to the questions that lingered after relegation in his final season and his previous stint at Burnley.

Dickman on Leeds loss

Elliott Dickman has demanded his side show more attitude and character after Newcastle United U21s fell to defeat a Leeds United. The young Magpies' six-match unbeaten league run came to an end with a 4-2 defeat the league leaders on Monday afternoon.

Kris Moore headed the hosts into the lead after just 50 seconds, but Josh Scott quickly levelled after capitalising on a pass from Jamie Miley. Newcastle withstood late pressure to go into the break level, but crumbled after the restart.

Max Dean bagged a second-half hat-trick in the space of just 18 minutes, and grabbed the first by pouncing on indecision from Harry Barclay to poke the ball past Jude Smith. The striker was then gifted a second just moments later, with a poor free-kick from Alex Murphy presenting the 18-year-old with an open goal.

Barclay pulled one back with a smart first-time finish from a Scott cutback, but Newcastle were easily cut open for Dean to complete his treble shortly afterwards. Dickman could not hide his frustration after the full-time whistle, admitting the players need to take 'responsibility' when the going gets tough on the pitch.
