Newcastle evening headlines: Summer transfer claim, Saint-Maximin update and Targett verdict

Here are the latest Newcastle United evening headlines on Monday, 21 February 2022.

Exciting summer ahead?

Newcastle United can move as high as 14 th place with a victory over Brentford in London on Saturday.

The Magpies have put themselves in a strong position for survival after picking up 11 points in their last five games.

While safety is by no means secured, optimism is high at St. James’ Park and the hierarchy at the club are already planning for an exciting summer.

Saint-Maximin training

Newcastle United winger Allan Saint-Maximin has videoed himself training in the gym amid his recent injury setback.

Saint-Maximin missed the Magpies’ 1-1 draw with West Ham on Saturday and could miss the next two weeks after receiving a kick on the calf against Aston Villa eight days ago.

Speaking about Saint-Maximin's injury, Howe told reporters: "He got a kick on his calf last week and it was too sore to play today - it was a late call, we hoped he might make the game but he didn't."

Images of Saint-Maximin in the gym will leave United fans encouraged they'll see the winger back on Saturday.

Targett impresses

Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe was very impressed with the performance by left-back Matt Targett in the 1-1 draw with West Ham.

Targett kept the in-form Jarrod Bowen very quiet throughout the afternoon in what just his second start for the club since his January arrival.

Speaking after the match, Howe revealed that he was very pleased with what Targett did at both ends of the field.

Howe said: "I thought Matty was very, very good.

"I think in the two performances he’s given, he’s been very, very confident and slipped into the team very impressively. He used the ball well, I thought he attacked well.

"He put a lot of balls in the box, and just his general, all-round game, his defending was of the highest level, in my opinion."
