Newcastle edge close to Nick Pope deal but he will have to dislodge Martin Dubravka as number one

Newcastle United hope to make progress on signing Burnley goalkeeper Nick Pope - after the Clarets dropped their astronomical demands on the England keeper.

At one stage this summer Burnley were reportedly holding on for £40million but United sources are now indicating they may get a deal for closer to £ 15million, which would include add ons. With Freddie Woodman set to join Preston North End a possible exit for Karl Darlow, the arrival of Pope will spice up the goalie department at United.

But Howe could well stick with Martin Dubravka as number one at St James' Park. He stated at the end of last season: "Martin's been an excellent goalkeeper for this team for many, many years.

"You just have to look back to the Liverpool game where he was outstanding. He's done very well. He's been a big part of our recent success."

Dubravka also played down talk of a summer departure when asked after the 2-1 win over Burnley about his future. Prompted on whether the good times will continue for him and United, Dubravka told Chronicle Live: "Yeah, I think it will be. We have shown how we have improved under this manager.

"Now we are already looking forward to next season and where we can finish, what we can achieve. I know that we are just at the beginning of the new era. But hopefully we can bring back the good times to Newcastle."
