Newcastle defender Dan Burn identified as a 'solution' for England at the World Cup

Tony Cascarino believes Newcastle United defender Dan Burn can help solve England's 'problems' at the back ahead of the 2022 World Cup.

Burn has replaced Matt Targett at left-back this season and has featured in a back-line that has conceded just once in four games.

Newcastle currently boast the best defensive record in the Premier League (10 goals conceded) and have lost just one of their opening 13 games (W6, D6) to sit fourth.

Cascarino has suggested that Gareth Southgate, who was in attendance at St James' Park as Newcastle beat Aston Villa 4-0 on Saturday, should look to Newcastle's defence as he prepares to name his squad next month.

"I did a piece at the start of January this year when I talked the best signing that Newcastle had made," the former Republic of Ireland international told talkSPORT. "You can debate that, but I thought it was Dan Burn at the time because I had watched him as a centre-half and left-back for Brighton numerous times.

"Very underrated, he just does everything simple at a very high level. He does really well. For me, this is how I see England, people ask me all the time, who do you think will win the World Cup'?

"It's a hard call, it's a cup competition, there's a lot of good sides. I don't think England will win it unless they get their back-four or five sorted out. I think they can win it with their forwards, but I certainly don't think they can win it with their back-line, whatever way Gareth Southgate goes.

"That's the issue, if they can solve the problems there, and having someone like Dan Burn come in, I think does help because he's a real natural defender.

"Trippier is another great addition. Newcastle's back-line this year has been brilliant, they've been the best in the Premier League. Watching Tottenham versus Newcastle last week, if you'd said to me a [to give you] a composite of Tottenham and Newcastle, I'd nearly take every Newcastle defender."

Burn joined his boyhood club Newcastle from Brighton & Hove Albion in January for £13 million, after making 85 appearances for the Seagulls. He had previously played in non-league at Darlington, before spells at Fulham and Wigan Athletic respectively.

The former Newcastle academy player has made 29 appearances during his first 10 months on Tyneside. Burn has never played at any level for England but his name has been mentioned more frequently in recent months due to his impressive form for Newcastle.
