Newcastle dad creates socks that cut your carbon footprint after fearing for daughters' future

A Newcastle dad has unveiled his new eco-friendly clothing business that aims to cut your carbon footprint.

Launched by father-of-two Marc Bucci this weekend, Social Socks offers environmentally-friendly socks which, Marc hopes, will help reduce the impact of the clothing industry on the planet. Marc started the business after becoming worried that his daughters might not enjoy same opportunities as him if global warming continues at its current pace.

The socks are free of plastic and made from organic materials, while 10% of every sale goes to wildlife charity WWF-UK. The company also pledges that its partners will plant a tree every single time an order is placed, and customers can even view its online virtual forest to find out how many trees have been planted thanks to the socks.

Marc said: “I started to feel so powerless knowing others around me were continuing to purchase plastic clothing, so I honestly just felt such an urge to give back and share how important this is.

“Making others aware of the impact their clothing decisions make is something I’m so passionate about, and I really hope that Social Socks will make a huge difference in how we view sustainability today. Our slogan #SocksThatGiveBack defines everything that we’re about – producing single-use plastic-free, organic socks that give back to charity with every single purchase.

“Despite more people becoming aware of the impacts of fast fashion, people still rarely consider the impact their socks have. The impact isn’t just in the landfill, either, since micro-plastics are also being released into the environment at every step during use - not to mention the amount of plastic ending up in our ocean every single day.

“It’s safe to say that we have some pretty huge goals here at Social Socks. Not only do we want to improve sustainability globally eventually, but we hope that through our sales, we will eventually raise £1 million for charity.

" As a father-of-two myself, I want to ensure my two daughters experience the world as we know it today – not how it’s predicted to be if people continue to ignore the impact of global warming and fast fashion. My family’s future means everything to me, and so I started Social Socks in the hope that others who agree and relate to this view will also take a step in the right direction to reduce their global footprint from the ground up.”

Produced in Britain, the socks are being sold in a variety of 'bold and vibrant' colours – including stone grey, forest green, ocean blue, dusty pink, midnight black, ice white and plum purple. They're also said to be designed for comfort, with half terry cushioning, classic flat-linked toe seams for comfort, arch support for improved fit, and a ribbed leg.

Marc added that when people think about fossil fuels and climate change, they rarely consider or think about the impact of their socks, which are often made with plastic.

He said: "There aren’t many other brands that give back to the environment, but whenever you purchase a quality pair of socks from Social socks, you're also helping the planet. Many other brands produce socks that are made with artificial fibres, which shed plastic micro-fibres every time-worn or washed. With over 60% of clothes being made with synthetic textiles derived from oil, producing these fibres can also profoundly impact the climate – not to mention that socks made with plastic could also be loaded with dangerous BPA [industrial chemical Bisphenol A].”

Available to be bought online, the socks' packaging and products are single-use plastic-free, delivered in a recycable or biodegradable envelope that fit through any letterbox.

The socks were launched at Tynemouth Market over the weekend, and can also be bought at: www.socialsocks.co.uk
