Newcastle Council tax support available and how to apply

Newcastle residents can get a discount on their council tax if they meet certain criteria. With the cost of living rising, bills are putting a lot of pressure on families struggling to make ends meet.

If you find yourself unable to pay your bills, particularly your council tax, then the best thing to do is reach out immediately to Newcastle City Council and let them know what’s happening, citizens' advice say. The council may be able to find a way that’s easier for you to pay or even apply discounts you didn’t know you were entitled to.

As a priority debt - which also includes your rent, mortgage, gas, electricity, TV licence, Magistrates Court fines and child support - late payments of council tax can be more serious than for other debts. There is a risk non-payers could lose their home, have their fuel supply cut off or even be sent to prison.

What support does Newcastle Council offer for those struggling to pay?

Newcastle City Council says that anyone who is struggling to pay their council tax should get in contact straight away. Its advisors will be able to take a look at your account and apply any discounts you may be eligible for but were not aware of.

This can include things like a single person's discount if you are the only adult in the home or you live with someone unemployed or on a low income. For those on benefits or low income themselves, there are options available to reduce the amount of council tax you pay.

For adults with certain disabilities, live-in carers, those under the age of 18 or full-time students, there are exemption rules that may mean you don’t have to pay any council tax at all. There is also a support scheme in place to help people who are struggling, meaning that the council can help to reduce the cost of your bill, even if it’s only for a month.

The support scheme is assessed based on the size of your household and the income you receive. For example, a family with one child with a weekly income of £290.01 to £355 could potentially receive up to a 50% discount.

More than anything, the council urges anyone who is struggling to contact them as soon as they possibly can. As well as helping you with your existing council tax issues, they are able to direct you towards independent advisors who could help with your existing debt and money worries.
