Newcastle could change transfer landscape as race for Liverpool 'target' Moses Caicedo hots up

Newcastle United will rival Liverpool for the signature of Brighton and Hove Albion midfielder Moises Caicedo in the upcoming transfer windows, according to reports.

The Ecuadorian made the move to the Premier League in January 2021 and has since been one of the Seagulls' most consistent performers, most noticeably under former manager Graham Potter. Such impressive displays have led to the midfielder being linked with a move to Anfield as well as Stamford Bridge and Old Trafford.

Caicedo was frequently linked with a switch to Liverpool in the summer but reports suggested it would take a fee north of £80m to persuade Brighton to part with the Caicedo, who was signed from Independiente del Valle for £4m.

But it now appears that Newcastle are willing to test Brighton's resolve with a move for the midfielder, according to the Mirror.

Eddie Howe's side have enjoyed a remarkable start to the season and currently sit in the Champions League places. Additionally, the Magpies were bought by a Saudi-led consortium, involving Saudi Arabia's Public Investor Fund, last October and are now the richest club in the world.

The report adds that Newcastle are 'ready to target' the 20-year-old midfield, which would be a blow for Liverpool and Jurgen Klopp who are said to be planning an overhaul of their department in the upcoming summer as Jordan Henderson and Thiago continue to age. Meanwhile, James Milner, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Naby Keita are all out of contract in 2023.

While Liverpool have been linked with other midfielders such as Borussia Dortmund's teenage sensation Jude Bellingham and Inter Milan stalwart Marcelo Brozovic, the fact that the Magpies are even involved in the conversation for Caicedo's services is a glimpse into just how drastic the football landscape in the Premier League is due to adjust in the coming years as Howe's side look to join England's usually sealed top-six club.

The Ecuadorian remained coy when asked about links to Liverpool and Manchester United earlier this year, saying: "I’m very happy here at Brighton. I’m not thinking about any other club than Brighton. This is the club where I am now and I will give everything for this club and to keep doing well here."

Any deal to sign Caicedo from the south coast outfit could prove to be difficult with Newcastle having finally acquired the services of Dan Ashworth earlier this year, the former Brighton sporting director who helped engineer a move for the midfielder from his native Ecuador.
