"I think what I've been doing previously has just been a performance."
Those are the words of a Newcastle-based content creator who discovered they were queer during the coronavirus pandemic. As Covid restrictions confined people to their homes, Ella Willis says they started to discover their true self and relied on the online queer community for a safe space to socialise.
The 22-year-old said: "I always thought I was bi but it wasn't something that I was exploring because I found it quite scary. It wasn't until the pandemic and things sort of slowed down that I started assessing myself a bit more and thinking 'hang on, I think what I've been doing previously has just been a performance.'"
