Newcastle have agreed a £51.5m deal with Freiburg that should see the versatile Switzerland midfielder Johan Manzambi swap the Bundesliga for the Premier League.

The 20-year-old, who has shone during this summer’s World Cup, is expected to sign a long-term contract at St James’ Park but the transfer will not be finalised while Switzerland remain in the World Cup. Manzambi, who has been widely coveted this summer, is struggling with a minor knee injury and Murat Yakin, Switzerland’s head coach, is unsure as to whether he will recover in time for the quarter-final against Argentina on Sunday.

Newcastle, meanwhile, remain insistent they have no intention of selling Bruno Guimarães to Arsenal but are aware the Brazil midfielder has become unsettled on Tyneside following the recent departures of Sandro Tonali and Anthony Gordon to Tottenham and Barcelona respectively.

It is possible the offer of a new contract could change that narrative but should Arsenal – who have yet to make a formal offer for Guimarães – bid in the region of £75m, Newcastle will have a decision to make. Much depends on how hard the 28-year-old, who could see his wages almost double in north London, pushes to leave.

Arsenal have signed Illan Meslier on a free transfer following the goalkeeper's departure from Leeds. The 26-year-old Frenchman joins after seven seasons at Elland Road, where he made 215 appearances in all competitions and kept 70 clean sheets.

“I’m very happy and very proud to join Arsenal. I cannot wait to show the love that I’ve got for this badge, and I cannot wait to win trophies with this team, because this is a club ‌that needs to lift ‌trophies again and again,” Meslier said.

“I want to start with the keepers, to show my levels, to continue to develop my skills, my ability. And then obviously to gain some game time, because this is what I missed last year.“

Meslier began his career at hometown club Lorient, graduating through the academy before making his senior debut in 2018 at the age of 18. After making 28 league appearances during the 2018-19 season, he joined Leeds on loan in August 2019.

He helped Leeds secure promotion to the Premier League in his first season in England and later made the move permanent. He went on to make 107 Premier ‌League appearances for the Yorkshire club.

Meslier will wear the number 30 shirt and faces stiff competition from first-choice ‌goalkeeper, David Raya, who won the Premier League Golden Glove in 2025-26.

Brentford have signed Callum Wilson on a one-year contract following his departure from West Ham.

“There is unbelievable quality in the dressing room, and I’ve met people today who are all very welcoming," said the striker. " You do get that family feel here so, like I ‌say, I’m ‌looking forward to getting started."

The 34-year-old joins after scoring seven goals and providing one assist in 35 appearances across all competitions last season, although only 12 ‌of those came as starts. At international level, Wilson earned nine caps for England, scoring twice.

Newcastle have also completed the £23m signing of the 18-year-old midfielder Sean Steur from Ajax on a five-year contract. Steur has been widely hyped as the Amsterdam club’s brightest emerging midfield talent since Frenkie de Jong.
