Newcastle are on the cusp of securing their Premier League survival after picking up 19 points from their last 24 available as they’ve pulled nine points clear of the relegation zone.
And the reward for that recent success is the ability to begin negotiations to sign their top targets this summer, with no worry of playing second tier football next season standing in their way.
In what is set to be a huge summer overhaul at the club, as the new owners set about building a team capable of challenging for trophies in the next few years, this could be the biggest in Newcastle ’s history.
The Magpies board are wasting no time in going about their transfer activity either, and following their recent good form in the league, it has helped to accelerate their plans to sign one of Europe’s most wanted strikers.
According to i, Newcastle’s are firmly in the running to capture Benfica striker Darwin Nunez this summer and it is hoped they will be able to beat off any competition to secure his signature.
How much money do you think Newcastle will spend this summer? Let us know what you think in the comments section below.
The Magpies struggled for goals ahead of the January transfer window and with a long-term injury suffered to top scorer Callum Wilson, £25million was splashed on Burnley striker Chris Wood.
The New Zealand international has performed well since his arrival, yet he has managed just one goal in nine Premier League appearances for his new club.
And now the Tyneside outfit are set to broaden their horizons and bring in a guaranteed and high-profile goalscorer this summer, with Nunez at the top of the list.
The 22-year-old has made a name for himself in the Portuguese top flight this season following 20 goals in just 22 appearances for Benfica.
Nunez certainly has an excellent eye for goal but it is his speed and acceleration which are among his biggest assets, and he would be exactly the type of player to get the St. James’ Park faithful on their feet next season.
And with Newcastle hoping to achieve nothing short of a top half finish next year, at the very least, the Uruguayan is backed to be the type of striker the club want to help them achieve their goals.
The Magpies were linked with Nunez in January and Benfica slapped a £50m price tag on their star asset, although it is now thought that £60m will be the required fee this summer in order to prise him away from the Portuguese outfit.
But considering the huge wealth of the club, that shouldn’t be too much of a problem, and that financial backing is set to play a huge part in their transfer success ahead of next season.
However, the north east club will certainly have to fight off competition from elsewhere, with Nunez’s goalscoring form this campaign already putting plenty of clubs on high alert.
