Newcastle 2-1 Wolves: Player ratings as Isak impresses with Willock and Almiron also starring

Newcastle United picked up a vital win over Wolverhampton Wanderers to keep their Champions League chances alive.

The Magpies went ahead through Alexander Isak with a glancing header in the first half but needed substitute Miguel Almiron to come to the rescue in the second half.

Wolves had equalised in the second half but were not good enough to hold on for a point.

Here's how the players rated overall:

Nick Pope 8

Shrugged off first half mix-up with Botman to produce some stunning saves. The best of which came when he tipped on to the bar to deny Wolves.

Kieran Trippier 7

Was right on the money to set up Isak in the first half. Untimely slip led to Wolves equaliser.

Fabian Schar 8

A strong defensive display as he booted away seven clearances.

Sven Botman 8

Got over his rush of blood with Pope back-pass to put in a solid display. A great effort with some important challenges.

Dan Burn 8

Had the Geordie fans roaring with approval with some excellent defensive moments.

Joe Willock 8

Suffered a horror miss in the first half. But more than made up for it as he slipped in Almiron for the winner. A really good display.

Sean Longstaff 7

Picked up in the second half and helped see out the victory.

Bruno Guimaraes 8

Watched a header cannon off the bar. Battled hard.

Allan Saint-Maximin 7

Troubled the Wolves defence a few times. But not his best display.

Jacob Murphy 7

Ran himself into the ground. Some positive moments.

Alexander Isak 9

Led the line excellently and weighed in with crucial opener. Newcastle missed him when he went off in the second half.

Subs

Callum Wilson 6 (for Isak 68)

Didn't have much impact.

Miguel Almiron 8 (for Saint-Maximin 68)

Responded brilliantly after being dropped

Matt Ritchie (for Murphy 84)

*Subs must play 15 minutes to earn a mark.

Nick Pope 7

Got away with a possible penalty thanks to VAR and ref Madley's call after a bad back-pass from Botman. A couple of routine stops.

Kieran Trippier 7

A peach of a delivery for Isak. Right on the money.

Fabian Schar 6

A steady shift so far.

Sven Botman 6

Not sure what he was thinking with back-pass to Pope.

Dan Burn 7

Got the nod ahead of Targett and has made contributions at both ends. Has won plenty of his defensive battles much to the approval of the crowd.

Joe Willock 6

A horror miss that would have made it 2-0.

Sean Longstaff 6

Yet to really make an impact in midfield.

Bruno Guimaraes 7

Watched a header cannon off the bar.

Allan Saint-Maximin 7

Has troubled the Wolves defence a few times.

Jacob Murphy 7

Has been busy down the right. A threat to Wolves.

Alexander Isak 8

A goal and some telling attacking play.
