Newborn baby among seven rescued from Holy Island causeway after crossing at unsafe time

Seven people, including a newborn baby, had to be rescued from the Holy Island causeway after attempting to cross at an unsafe and dangerous time.

The group were attempting to cross the popular Northumberland causeway by car outside of the safe crossing times and during the high spring tide. Seahouses Inshore Lifeboat, as well as the Coastguard were launched to help the group who were reportedly wading through the water.

The group were forced to abandon their vehicle on the causeway but safely managed to reach Holy Island where they were handed over to the care of the coastguard.

Visitors to the island are reminded not to attempt to cross the causeway outside specified safe crossing times.

Seahouses Lifeboat Station said: "At 14:22hr on Saturday 19th March 2022, UK Coastguard requested the immediate and urgent launch of Seahouses Inshore Lifeboat to assist six persons and a new born baby, reported in the water, while attempting to cross the causeway by car, outside of the safe crossing times. The HM Coastguard Holy Island were also being mobilised.

"Safe crossing times for Saturday 19/03/2022 were from 07:05 until 13:20 and from 19:25 until 01:40 (Sun). High Tide at Holy Island was 15:29hr that day (high Spring Tide).The persons were reported to be wading through the water, on the Holy Island side of the Refuge Box, having abandoned their vehicle in the water on the Causeway.

"The Inshore Lifeboat was quickly launched and made best speed towards Holy Island. Shortly after launching, it was confirmed that the casualties had safely reached Holy Island and were in the safe care of Holy Island Coastguards.

"The Inshore Lifeboat was stood down and returned to station."
