Indonesian police announced on Saturday that New Zealand pilot Phillip Mehrtens has been released after being held captive for over 18 months in Papua, Indonesia. Mehrtens was kidnapped by an armed faction of the West Papua National Liberation Army on February 7, 2023, following his landing of a small commercial plane in the remote region of Nduga.

Brigadier General Faizal Ramadhani, the chief of Cartenz 2024 Peace Operations, stated that efforts were made to secure Mehrtens' release through engagement with religious leaders, church leaders, traditional leaders, and the family of Egianus Kogoya, the leader of the faction responsible for the abduction. The primary focus was on ensuring the safety of the pilot and minimizing any potential risks.
