New Zealand’s 54th Parliament is holding its final sitting this week before voters head to the polls on November 7, with neither the left nor the right commanding a decisive lead.
That makes New Zealand’s electoral system particularly important. Unlike elections where the party winning the most constituencies can expect to govern, New Zealand uses Mixed Member Proportional representation, or MMP, a system designed to make the composition of Parliament broadly reflect how people vote nationwide.
