As a heatwave sweeps through New York, some residents are eligible for free air conditioning units to combat the soaring temperatures. The state's governor has issued a warning about the 'significant risk' posed by the extreme heat.
Through New York's Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP), eligible individuals can receive an air conditioner or fan at no cost. The assistance covers window units, portable air conditioners, fans, and existing wall sleeve units, with a maximum value of $800 for the former and $1,000 for the latter.
Households with a single occupant earning up to $3,035 per month may qualify for the program. The income threshold increases with the size of the household, allowing larger families with a gross monthly income below $7,706 to be eligible.
Notably, households receiving benefits from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) may also qualify for the free air conditioning units. Additionally, households with vulnerable members, such as individuals over 60 years old or children under six, are eligible for assistance.
The program is funded by the federal government but is administered by New York's Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance, as confirmed by the governor.
