New York (AFP) - The 62-year-old man arrested for allegedly shooting 10 people on the New York subway last month pleaded not guilty on Friday to federal terrorism charges.
Frank James was taken into custody a day after the April 12 attack, which took place as a crowded subway train pulled into a Brooklyn station.
James is alleged to have detonated two smoke canisters on the train as it pulled into the station before firing into the crowd.
Ten people were wounded while another 20 were injured in the ensuing panic.
James fled the scene, triggering a day-long manhunt until he was detained by officers on a Manhattan street.
The federal terrorism charges carry a potential sentence of life in prison.He also faces state charges in connection with the attack.
Prior to the attack, James had posted several videos of himself on YouTube delivering long, political tirades, as well as criticizing New York's mayor.
His next court appearance was set for July 25.
