Police have charged the man arrested for allegedly shooting 10 people at a Brooklyn subway station with terrorism.
Frank James, 62, was arrested by officers patrolling the East Village neighbourhood of New York, CNN reports.
It comes after a 30-hour manhunt to find James following the brutal shooting on Tuesday, which left 29 people injured.
Video posted on Twitter shows the suspect being led away in handcuffs outside an off-licence.
He was arrested while wearing a dark blue T-shirt, matching trousers and a black cap.
Announcing the arrest, New York Mayor Eric Adams said: “We got him. We got him.”
James was later charged with one charge of terrorism, US Attorney Breon Peace announced.
If found guilty, he faces life in prison.
Mr Peace said: “(Tuesday) was a dark day for all of us. But the bright spots of the incredible heroism of our fellow New Yorkers helping each other in a time of crisis, the quick response by our first responders, and the hard work by all of our law enforcement partners that has been ongoing truly shines bright.”
The prosecutor said the charge stems from evidence James crossed state lines, bringing weapons with him, to carry out an act of terror on New York City’s subway system.
James was previously named as a wanted man after officials found a key at the scene of the shooting, which led them to a rented U-Haul truck discovered in Brooklyn.
New York commuters were shocked when a masked gunman threw smoke bombs and opened fired at them in a city subway car on Tuesday.
Horrifying footage showed a smoke-filled platform as panicked commuters fled from the train when a man fell through the train doors and collapsed on the ground.
Smoke billowed out as the train car pulled into the 36th Street station and opened its doors. Riders trapped inside poured out, some falling to the ground. Images showed streaks of blood on the platform.
James fired a semi-automatic Glock 17 handgun that was later recovered at the scene, along with three extended-ammunition magazines, a hatchet, some consumer-grade fireworks and a container of gasoline, police said.
In a press conference Police Commissioner Keechant Sewell previously said James made “concerning posts” on social media regarding New York City, homelessness and the mayor, Eric Adams.
NYPD Chief of Detectives James Essig said: “We are endeavouring to locate him to determine his connection to the subway shooting, if any.
“The two crime scenes, the subway and the van, are very active and are still being processed.
“Mr. James is just a person of interest we know right now who rented that U-Haul van in Philadelphia.
“The keys to that U-Haul van was found in the subway in our shooter's possessions.

“We don’t know right now if Mr. James has any connection to the subway. That’s still under investigation.”
Mayor Adams, whose security was boosted as a result of James’ social media posts, later blamed gun violence in the US.
He said: “It’s going to take the entire nation to speak out and push back against the cult of death that has taken hold in this nation.
“A cult that allows innocence to be sacrificed on a daily basis.”
