End of an era as New York subway finally switches payment system

New York City's MetroCard, which modernised its subway system by replacing tokens in 1994, is now set for retirement.

More than three decades later, the gold-hued card, known for its notoriously finicky magnetic strip, will cease sales and refills on 31 December 2025. The transit system is fully transitioning to OMNY, a contactless payment method. T
