New York: Double-decker tourist bus crashes in Manhattan injuring 18 people

Eighteen people were left injured after two buses collided in New York City on Thursday evening in what was described as a “major” incident.

A TopView tour bus collided with a commuter bus in Manhattan at around 7pm local time, shattering the front windows of the tour bus.

None of those injured suffered life-threatening injuries.

Most of the injured suffered cuts and bruises, said fire department officials, although some were treated for suspected fractured bones and neck injuries.

Another 63 people were evacuated from the scene of the collision at First Avenue and 23rd Street. Both of the buses were crowded at the time of the collision, officials said.

Speaking to reporters at the scene, emergency service personnel said they could not speculate about what led up to the crash.

“We’ve had a few minor challenges in the double-decker bus - going through the windows, taking people out," said Paul Hopper, deputy chief of the EMS Division 1 of the city’s fire department.

“I heard the lady next to me scream, so I looked up and I saw this bus barreling towards us,” Ishrak Jahan, a passenger on one bus, told CBS News New York.

“I just saw glass everywhere for a second. It was honestly like I was in a movie ... I saw blood. I immediately called 911.”
