New York City: State of emergency declared as torrential rain floods subways, roads and basements

New York City was under a state of emergency on Friday as heavy rains shut down part of the city’s subway system, left streets flooded and blocked access to a major airport terminal.

State governor Kathy Hochul declared a state of emergency over the “extreme rainfall”, after more than five inches of rain fell in some areas overnight.
