The leader of a New York City church has been relieved of his duties following an investigation that uncovered instances of mismanagement. Monsignor Jamie Gigantiello, who oversaw a church in the Williamsburg neighborhood of Brooklyn, was stripped of any pastoral oversight or governance role by Bishop Robert Brennan of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Brooklyn.
The investigation revealed that Gigantiello had made unauthorized financial transfers to a former top aide in New York City Mayor Eric Adams' administration, which is under investigation for corruption. As a result, Bishop Brennan appointed Bishop Witold Mroziewski as the administrator of the parish to safeguard public trust and protect church funds.
Gigantiello's administrative and pastoral powers were revoked after a music video by pop star Sabrina Carpenter, filmed at the church, sparked criticism. The video for her song “Feathers” depicted provocative scenes that led to public outcry.
In addition to Gigantiello, a deacon who had been serving as a temporary administrator was also relieved of duties after using racist and offensive language in private conversations that were secretly recorded at Gigantiello’s direction.
The investigation further revealed that Gigantiello had used a church credit card for substantial personal expenses and transferred $1.9 million in parish funds to bank accounts linked to Frank Carone, Adams' former chief of staff. Carone's law firm repaid $1 million of the funds with interest, and federal investigators have subpoenaed the church for information on their financial dealings.
The Diocese of Brooklyn is fully cooperating with law enforcement in the investigations. Gigantiello has defended his actions, stating that the investments were legal and beneficial for the church.
Despite the controversy, Sabrina Carpenter made light of the situation during a concert at Madison Square Garden, joking about the indictment of Mayor Adams. The Diocese continues to address the fallout from the music video and the financial improprieties uncovered during the investigation.
