People have been evacuated from the Museum of Modern Art, after police confirmed two women were stabbed in the New York landmark.
The incident happened Saturday afternoon around 4:15pm local time and both women were employees of the museum.
The two injured women were taken to the Bellevue Hospital but their injuries were not thought to be life-threatening police said, with both in a stable condition.
The police said they were looking for one man in connection with the attack who is reportedly still in the museum.
Witnesses claimed that at least one person was stabbed and another claimed that two women were carried out on stretchers.
Another witness reportedly said they saw someone stabbed in the underarm and others said that when police arrived they ran straight into the coat room.
Police were lined up and down the street as they responded to the reports.
A video posted from the scene shows people quickly exiting the museum and some gathering outside the landmark.
A NYPD police car can be seen outside with its lights on.
People were advised to avoid the local area around the museum near West 53rd Street and 6th Avenue while police responded and closed off the scene.
The suspect was a white man wearing a dark jacket, blue face mask and sunglasses, police said.
David Dujerko, from Chicago, told NBC New York: "Suddenly they said 'the museum's closed' and people started running. Little panic onth escalators and then they started shouting 'get out, get out for your own safety".
The outlet was also told by a source that investigators believe the suspect, who is known to police, fled the building shortly after the incident.
Police have yet to make any arrests or file any charges in relation to the stabbing.
