New Year's Day superstitions including why cleaning brings bad luck

Everyone wants to start the New Year on the right foot and getting your house in order seems the perfect way to make a start.

There's nothing better than having a sparklingly clean home as another year rolls around. But don't don the marigolds today as superstition says it’s bad luck to do housework on January 1.

While a lot of people will be too hungover to even consider cleaning anyway then they'd better hope that they're not sick. Old wives’ tales say you shouldn’t do any type of cleaning at all on the first day of the year.

One says that doing laundry on the first day of the year will ‘wash away a loved one’ – meaning that a friend or family member will pass away in the following 364 days. Meanwhile another says that washing clothes or dishes on New Year’s Day will simply ‘wash away good luck’.

A third says that sweeping the floors could sweep away any good fortune that may be heading your way. Emptying your bins and taking out the rubbish is also a big no-no on New Year’s Day as superstition says that removing things from the house could encourage prosperity to disappear.

However, if you hope for better luck for 2023 there are some things that superstition says can help too. A Latin American tradition involves eating 12 grapes at the strike at midnight - representing 12 positive, joyful months ahead.

In Brazil and elsewhere around the globe, it’s also thought that wearing white clothing helps promote peace of mind for the year ahead. If you’re hoping 2023 will be full of adventure and travel, emptying a suitcase and taking it for a stroll is said to channel good fortune in the travel sphere for the following 12 months.
