It's set to be a cold start to 2023, with Ireland facing wintry showers with a chance of sleet and snow for some areas on New Year’s Day.
Met Eireann has forecast heavy rain, hail, thunder and sleet for today, with freezing temperatures and wintry showers overnight for Dublin and other areas. The national forecaster has also warned that freezing fog will develop later this evening as the weather takes a cold turn.
According to Met Eireann's national forecast, today will be cloudy with "scattered outbreaks of rain" in Leinster and Munster, before becoming mostly dry later. Highest temperatures will range from 5 to 7 degrees with light winds.

Met Eireann's forecast for the coming days reads:
Today
"Mostly cloudy with scattered outbreaks of rain in Munster and Leinster this morning. Drier with clear spells and patches of mist and fog elsewhere. Scattered showers will move into Connacht and Ulster this afternoon and evening, with sleet possible on high ground, and it will become drier and brighter in the south and east. Highest temperatures of 3 to 9 degrees, coldest in the north, with a light to moderate southwest to west or variable wind."
Tonight
"Tonight will be cold and frosty with ice possible. Patches of freezing fog will develop in a light and variable wind. Lowest temperatures of 0 or 1 degree."
Monday
"Monday morning will be very cold and frosty with icy stretches and patches of freezing fog. It will stay quite cold for the day, with temperatures only reaching 3 to 6 degrees, but it will be dry with sunny spells. Winds will be light and variable."
Monday night
"Cloudy and windy with outbreaks of rain moving east, turning to sleet at times. Lowest temperatures ranging from 2 to 8 degrees, northeast to southwest, with a fresh to strong and gusty southerly wind."
Tuesday
Milder but wet and windy with spells of rain and showers moving across the country throughout the day. Highest temperatures of 11 to 13 degrees, in a fresh to strong and gusty south to southwest wind.
Tuesday night
"Breezy with outbreaks of rain early in the night, but becoming drier and calmer by morning. Lowest temperatures of 5 to 10 degrees with a moderate to fresh westerly wind, easing later.
Wednesday
"Over the northern half of the country it will be mostly dry and bright but it will be cloudier further south with patchy light rain or drizzle. Highest temperatures of 7 to 11 degrees north to south, in a light to moderate westerly or variable wind."
