A Wigan-based animal charity who cares for abandoned greyhounds has issued an appeal to help their current residents find a new home in 2023. Makants Greyhound Rescue, in Mort Lane, Tyldesley, have a number of hounds in their care hoping to win over the hearts of adopters this January.
Makants Greyhound Rescue is a self-funded, independent charity who rescue, rehabilitate and rehome retired and injured greyhounds who have been used for racing.
Formed in December 2013, they can have up to 21 greyhounds in their kennels at any given time, and during their nine years of operation, have successfully rehomed just under 600 ex-racing greyhounds.

This month, the rescue are hoping to find loving homes for the likes of Piggy, Pixie and Hugo, as well as long-term residents Ty and Kody, who have been at the Wigan-based kennels for almost a year.
Here are 11 greyhounds hoping 2023 will mean New Year, New Home.
Piggy
Piggy was originally rehomed by Makants in 2018, but five years on, he’s found himself back in rescue ‘through no fault of his own’, and is now looking for a forever family.
Makants said: “He is a lovely hound, great with children and other dogs. He was a fantastic dog on our fundraisers when he was originally with us, charming everyone he met.
“Piggy will need someone around the home initially to help him settle in, he is obviously a little confused now finding himself back in kennels. He is also easy to walk and we hope it won't be long before he is back in a home once again.”
Hazel
Weeks before Christmas, Hazel arrived at Makants in search of a new home. Since arriving on December 4, she’s said to have settled in well, but staff are still getting to know her.
The rescue said: “She is a confident girl who is easy to walk and does not seem reactive to other dogs. We believe Hazel would be best homed as an only dog.”
Chief
Like Hazel, Chief also arrived at the Tyldesley-based rescue on December 4, and quickly became a firm favourite with volunteers.
He is a gentle boy and is described by kennel founder Siobhan as 'adorable', and he loves spending time in the enrichment doing brain training.
The charity added: “Chief is slowly getting used to other breeds of dog he meets when out on walks, we are looking for an adopter who has experience of greyhounds or larger dogs.”
Flash
Due to a change in home circumstances Flash has been returned to Makants for rehoming for a second time. Flash has been described as a ‘stunning, friendly boy’ who has enjoyed being in a home, so he’s hoping to find another very soon.
Makants said: “We are looking for a home as soon as possible for Flash as he is missing his home comforts. We believe he would need someone around for a large amount of the day and he would enjoy the company of another female greyhound.”
Laddie
Three-year-old Laddie arrived at Makants on November 18, 2022, and had an adorable quirk.
Described by Siobhan as a 'lovely gentle and friendly lad', Laddie doesn't like the scary floor on the way to his kennels though so has a special carpet made of towels to ensure his safe arrival.
Laddie also loves a cuddle and is fine with other dogs.
Pixie
Stunning blue brindle greyhound Pixie is a ‘very friendly’ pooch who came into rescue back in October.
“Pixie is settling in well and is a friendly girl,” the charity said. “In fact she is VERY friendly and treats everyone as though they are her long lost very best friend.”
Who could resist that face in that ‘adopt me’ bandana?
Evie
Evie is a ‘confident and inquisitive’ dog who is ‘super friendly’ and loves a walk. She found herself without a home in September, and has been searching for a family ever since.
Makants said: “She is super friendly, a little strong on the lead to start with when going out on her walks, but soon calms down. She is great with greyhounds but is reactive to other breeds at the moment - something we are working on. We are looking for an experienced home for Evie where she would like the company of a male greyhound too.”
Millie
Millie is Makants dog of the month for January 2023, using the title to spotlight the three-year-old pocket rocket in a bid to get her a home through social media posts.
The pooch arrived in rescue in August, and has spent five months patiently awaiting a new home.
“This girl may be small in stature but large in character,” the charity commented. “Millie certainly has a zest for life and is interested in everything going on around her, she doesn’t want to miss a thing!”
As well as her love of walks, Millie equally loves lazing in her kennel and if anyone can provide some fuss, even better.
The rescue added: “Millie treats everyone as though they are her very best friend. She will need a home with owners who have previous dog experience, preferably of greyhounds and who are willing to give her a fair amount of exercise.
“Any children must be older (10 plus) as smaller children could get knocked over if Millie gets a bit giddy.”
Kody
Kody is a friendly and quieter boy who has spent what feels like an unfairly long time in kennels, first arriving in March last year. The toy-obsessed pooch is hoping his party trick might help him get adopted.
Siobhan said: “Kody's so cute, he takes a toy from his kennel every day when he's going in the paddock, places it down, has a run around then brings it back in with him”.
The kennels added: “Kody can be reactive towards other breeds of dog he sees on his walks - but he can be easily distracted. He would be happy to live with a female greyhound or would be equally happy to be the only dog in the family. We are also looking for an adopter who has previous dog experience.”
Hugo
Handsome Hugo is a friendly lad who absolutely loves a fuss, and the more attention the better. He walks well on the lead and has enjoyed his daily walks and days out with the charity’s experienced volunteers.
“For Hugo we are looking for an adult only home with owners who have experience of greyhounds,” Makants explained. “Hugo would be fine living as the only dog in the household or could happily live with a female hound.”
Ty
Lovely lad Ty has been at Makants since February last year, and surely can’t spend a second Valentine’s Day without someone to call his own?
Ty has settled in well on the lead and is a very friendly lad who just loves adults, even charming the female volunteers with a roll around in the grass.
Makants said: “He is a big lad with the longest legs we've ever seen on a greyhound. On walks he can be a bit giddy and he's also very nosy. He is now known as the long legged leaner as he homes in for a 'lean' at every opportunity he gets.”
Ty is also described as a 'happy boy' by volunteers and as 'one of the sweetest dogs ever' by Siobhan.
They added: “We are looking for someone with greyhound experience for Ty as he can be reactive to other breeds of dog and some greyhounds too. We believe Ty would prefer a home without children and to be the only dog in the home.”
